The Return of the Danish and Swedish Armed Forces to the Baltic States
This paper highlights the often-overlooked roles of Denmark and Sweden in bolstering the security of the Baltic States, particularly Latvia. Both countries have made significant contributions to establishing the armed forces of the Baltic States following their independence from the Soviet Union. Among various recent defence initiatives, Denmark was one of the first to actively engage in NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission and enhanced Forward Presence in Estonia and subsequently in Latvia. With Sweden's recent accession to NATO and the deployment of troops to Latvia, this study examines Danish and Swedish contributions to the defence of the Baltic States since the 1990s while also looking ahead to the future.
